Being a Citizen of a Nation, it is extremely important to know the language spoken in the areas of that particular nation. So as being citizens of the country, Pakistan it is our duty to learn and speak in the language which is commonly spoken all over Pakistan; Urdu. Besides Urdu there are various languages spoken in Pakistan according to the areas. But as a Pakistani speaking Urdu is a must. Sadly people have become completely complexed. Meaning, they have lost their identities. Today, Urdu has been categorized as the language of the lower class. How mean and selfish. Where is this leading us to? It’s taking us nowhere. I’m not saying that we should only speak Urdu, we should speak other languages too. But we shouldn’t be “complexed” by speaking Urdu. English has taken over the world. That’s a big success. And why has this happened? Because the English are proud of their language. They feel superior by speaking their language. They are not complexed. They do not feel deprived. I saw on the television, that a man translated the Holy Quran into Urdu in Roman letters. He did a good job for those who wish to learn Urdu but cannot read or write it. These are those people who have not been raised in Pakistan. Who have not ever lived in a Pakistani society but they are Pakistani by heart.
Previously I read an article over The Express Tribune, I do not remember the writer’s name. She had mentioned an incident, that a few friends were having a chitchat in a restaurant in Italy, there the waiter asked them if they were from Europe as they were speaking fluent english. After getting ‘no’ as a reply from the friends the waiter asked them the reason for not speaking in their native language. The people were left speechless. So, we come to a conclusion that, Urdu is basically a complex for the Pakistanis of today. These days when you ask someone to read an article in Urdu, their reply would be ‘Oh dear, I am so bad at Urdu. I don’t want to read.’ It’s just stupid, i mean hello, you’re living in Pakistan and you don’t know the language! Or even if you do, you won’t speak it because you’d be considered “Urdu Medium.” And when one would ask someone to speak In English, then the tongue would not stop blabbing in Accents you’ve never heard in your life before. Its a crazy fact though. This makes me sad and want to laugh at the same time. People have lost their values. It’s just really sad.
It’s Our responsibility, Our duty, to raise and promote the culture of our Pakistan. The country which is already facing downfall, at least we should not let it’s language face downfall! I hope we take this concept of Complex out of our minds.
